15C — MQ-1 Operator:
Civilian Career Guide
Army 15C experience connects remotely piloted aircraft operation, launch and recovery, mission planning, reconnaissance collection, communications, site setup, records, and crew training. Civilian opportunities are strongest in commercial UAS, remote sensing, mapping, aviation operations, and technical programs. Military qualification does not issue FAA Part 107 authority, and classified collection or operational details must remain protected.

Military terminology maps to civilian language differently than it reads. The full before and after translation is in the resume section below.

Remote piloting, preflight planning, launch and recovery, site selection, sensor collection, mission logs, and risk controls can support commercial drone mapping. Surveying, construction, utilities, agriculture, insurance, public-safety, and environmental firms hire UAS operators. This salary benchmark uses BLS surveying and mapping technicians because BLS does not publish a standalone commercial-drone occupation. Military MQ-1 qualification does not issue FAA Part 107 authority. Prove flight logs, aircraft, collections, area covered, incidents, deliverables, and a releasable portfolio.
Growing commercial UAS laneReconnaissance planning, sensor tasking, imagery collection, terrain awareness, metadata, and coordination with intelligence users can support remote-sensing or GIS work. Engineering firms, utilities, environmental organizations, governments, and contractors hire specialists who turn location data into usable products. Collection experience is not automatically GIS analysis or professional cartography. Build releasable samples showing software, imagery, coverage, metadata, processing, quality checks, products delivered, and decisions supported.

Airports, fixed-base operators, flight departments, test ranges, and contractors hire operations specialists. This mapping does not create air traffic control, dispatcher, or pilot authority. Quantify flights, sites, aircraft movements, records, airspace actions, weather decisions, schedule changes, incidents, and agencies coordinated.
Current May 2025 national wage dataOperator academics, simulator events, flight instruction, evaluations, emergency procedures, qualification tracking, and corrective training can translate into technical learning roles. UAS firms, aerospace companies, contractors, schools, and government programs hire specialists who standardize complex operations. Military instructor status should be tied to the actual aircraft and curriculum. Quantify learners, hours, flights, evaluations, qualification rates, remediation, safety events, and readiness improvement.
Current May 2025 national wage dataMission planning, launch-site preparation, equipment, communications, collection requirements, flight schedules, stakeholders, and after-action improvement can support UAS project work for experienced members. Aerospace, engineering, geospatial, construction, and government organizations hire project specialists. Technical operation alone is not project ownership. Show milestones, schedules, risks, assets, stakeholders, budgets where applicable, deliverables, issues resolved, and measurable project outcomes.

Credentials That Improve Civilian Marketability
FAA Remote Pilot Certificate is the central authority bridge for many commercial small-UAS roles. Military MQ-1 experience helps with knowledge and judgment, but it does not itself issue the certificate or waive civil operating rules.
Esri ArcGIS Pro Associate can validate intermediate GIS workflow skill for members moving beyond collection into mapping and analysis. Pursue it after building real ArcGIS projects; MQ-1 sensor operation alone does not meet the recommended experience.
Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM) can help experienced 15Cs translate mission schedules, site setup, equipment, stakeholders, risks, and deliverables into civilian project language. It complements UAS or GIS credentials rather than replacing them.
Resume Translation: From MQ-1 Operations to Civilian UAS Value
