1D7X4 — Data Engineering:
Civilian Career Guide

Air Force Data Engineering specialists now span knowledge management, data operations, and software engineering. Depending on shred, they manage SharePoint and information lifecycles, build data pipelines and AI solutions, or design, code, test, document, and control software. Civilian paths include knowledge management, data engineering, database work, software development, quality assurance, governance, and technical program leadership.

Database architects median: $135,980 (BLS May 2024)
Software developers median: $133,080
Air Force · Knowledge management, data pipelines, AI integration, software, testing, and governance
Air Force source note
The October 2025 DAFECD changed 1D7X4 to Data Engineering with three work roles. Core personnel manage knowledge and SharePoint environments. The D shred designs data models, governance, pipelines, cloud and AI integrations using tools such as Python and SQL. The P shred performs software requirements, design, coding, testing, configuration management, documentation, and project management. Required qualifications vary by shred and position under the DoD Cyber Workforce framework, with Secret through Top Secret access requirements.

Top Civilian Role Matches for 1D7X4

Data Engineer Highest direct technical path
$80k – $190k

Airmen with the D shred or equivalent pipeline work can target data engineering when they can demonstrate SQL, Python, cloud services, data modeling, orchestration, testing, monitoring, governance, and production support. Employers need evidence that pipelines were operational, reliable, secure, and maintainable, not only that data was analyzed. Build public projects when protected systems cannot be discussed. Quantify sources, volume, latency, failures, quality, cost, and users supported.

Software Developer / Application Engineer
$80k – $211k

The P shred maps to developer roles through requirements, coding, debugging, code review, unit tests, web applications, databases, and documentation. Hiring depends on language depth, frameworks, version control, deployment, architecture, and a visible portfolio. Do not present occasional scripts as production software engineering. Show applications, users, code ownership, tests, defects, releases, performance, and security.

Knowledge Management / SharePoint Specialist
$55k – $135k

Core 1D7X4 knowledge-management work supports SharePoint administration, information architecture, workflow automation, content governance, records, permissions, and organizational knowledge roles. Employers want sites, libraries, metadata, retention, search, Power Platform, user requirements, adoption, and lifecycle controls. Translate mission terminology into business processes and user outcomes. Microsoft credentials may help, but a portfolio of sites, workflows, governance decisions, and measurable adoption is stronger.

Software QA / Test Analyst
$60k – $167k

Requirements analysis, test plans, test data, integration, regression, verification, acceptance testing, defect reporting, and release recommendations map directly to software quality roles. Employers increasingly expect test automation, APIs, CI/CD, traceability, and risk-based coverage. Show requirements tested, test cases, automation, defects found, escaped defects, release cycles, and time saved. Manual testing experience remains useful, but automation expands options and compensation.

Data Governance / Technical Program Lead
$85k – $200k

Experienced 1D7X4s who establish standards, security, quality, lifecycle, accessibility, configuration control, or cross-team delivery can pursue governance and technical program roles. Civilian leaders also manage budgets, vendors, contracts, architecture decisions, privacy law, staffing, and business outcomes. Match the lane to actual depth. Quantify datasets, systems, teams, policies, audits, releases, risk reduction, adoption, and delivery performance.

Transferable Strengths: What Civilian Employers Actually See

Three Distinct Technical Lanes
1D7X4 is not one uniform job. Identify whether your evidence is knowledge management, data operations, software engineering, testing, configuration management, or leadership before targeting roles.
Requirements to Production Delivery
The specialty connects user needs to data models, code, workflows, tests, and deployed services. Employers value traceable requirements, releases, reliability, security, and user outcomes.
Data Lifecycle and Governance
Policies for quality, access, security, retention, and disposal translate to enterprise governance. Show standards, datasets, owners, controls, audits, and remediation.
Testing and Configuration Discipline
Test plans, baselines, change packages, defects, and acceptance decisions demonstrate controlled delivery. Quantify coverage, defects, release frequency, and escaped-error reduction.
Mission-Focused Stakeholder Collaboration
Airmen work with analysts, scientists, users, developers, and leaders. Translate requirements workshops, priorities, tradeoffs, adoption, and measurable improvements.

Transition Mistakes That Reduce Your Options

01
Using the Old RAWS Title
The October 2025 DAFECD classifies 1D7X4 as Data Engineering. Do not market this current code as radar or weather-systems maintenance unless documenting a verified legacy history separately.
02
Claiming All Three Shreds as Expert Depth
Exposure to knowledge management, data, and software does not mean equal proficiency. Lead with the shred, tools, projects, and outcomes you personally owned.
03
Listing Tools Without a Portfolio or Production Result
Recruiters need pipelines, applications, workflows, tests, users, reliability, and impact. Build public evidence when classified or government systems cannot be shown.

Resume Translation: From 1D7X4 to Civilian Data and Software

State the shred, stack, production scope, controls, and measurable outcome.

Before: Military language without civilian scope
Managed SharePoint, built data tools, developed software, and supported mission systems.
After: Civilian language with scale and outcomes
Designed and operated 14 production data pipelines integrating 26 structured and unstructured sources into a governed cloud analytics environment serving 430 users. Used Python, SQL, orchestration, automated tests, and monitoring to process 1.8 TB monthly, improve successful-load reliability from 91% to 99.4%, and cut data availability from 18 hours to 3. Built two web applications and 11 workflow automations from documented user requirements, completing code review, unit, integration, security, and acceptance testing across 17 releases. Established metadata, access, retention, quality, and change-control standards for 68 datasets, closing 39 audit findings. Led a six-person delivery team and prioritized 74 defects and change requests, reducing backlog 36% while maintaining documented baselines and release notes.
The Translation Formula
Data operations → data models, pipelines, orchestration, quality, monitoring, cloud, and production support
Software engineering → requirements, design, code, review, testing, release, and documentation
Knowledge management → information architecture, SharePoint, metadata, workflows, search, and lifecycle governance
Software testing → traceability, test data, regression, defects, acceptance, and release recommendations
Technical leadership → backlog, standards, risk, stakeholders, team delivery, and configuration control
Always quantify: sources, volume, latency, pipelines, applications, users, tests, defects, releases, reliability, datasets, and backlog

1D7X4 Civilian Career FAQs

What civilian role is closest to 1D7X4?
It depends on shred and assignment. Data engineer fits pipeline and cloud work, software developer fits P-shred coding, and knowledge-management or SharePoint specialist fits core information-lifecycle work. Testing and governance are also strong paths.
Is 1D7X4 still RAWS?
No. The 31 October 2025 DAFECD defines 1D7X4 as Data Engineering. Current pages and resumes should use that title. Legacy radar and weather experience should be described by the code and title held at that time.
Do I need a degree for data engineering or software development?
Many employers accept strong experience and portfolios, while others require a degree for labor categories or engineering titles. Read postings carefully and build public technical evidence that demonstrates current skills.
Which certification should I choose?
Choose by lane. AWS Data Engineer supports cloud pipelines, AWS Developer supports cloud applications, and Data+ supports foundational analytics. A portfolio and production outcomes usually matter more than collecting several unrelated certificates.
